Endocrinology services currently available have a particular focus on metabolic bone disease.  Patients who wish to see an Endocrinologist at The George Clinic must be referred by their General Practitioner before making an appointment.

Endocrinology Specialists

Professor Michael Hooper is an Endocrinologist with a particular interest in Calcium and Bone Disease. He has, for the past thirty years, been involved in the development of the field of bone and mineral metabolism in Australia and New Zealand and was elected Honorary Secretary to Australian and New Zealand Bone & Mineral Society on its foundation in 1988, a position held until 1993.

He is a past President of the Australian and New Zealand Bone & Mineral Society. He has been active in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and is currently President of the Adult Medicine Division. He is, at present, a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Sydney, Area Head of the Bone and Mineral Stream in Endocrinology in the Sydney South West Area Health Service and Director of Diagnostic Endocrinology at RPAH.

After graduation he trained at RNSH and at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow before returning to work as an Endocrinologist at the Royal Adelaide in 1976. Returning to Sydney in 1984 as Director of Endocrinology at Concord Hospital he built up the department’s interest in Metabolic Bone Disease to the strong position it holds today. He has accreditation to Concord and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, as a Consultant in bone and mineral disorders to The New Children’s Hospital at Westmead, to the Sydney Adventist Hospital and to Norfolk Island Hospital. He now consults at The George Clinic providing endocrinology advice to his patients.

Dr Sophia Zoungas graduated from Monash University, Victoria in 1993 with honours and gained her FRACP in Endocrinology in 2002 after completing advanced training at Monash Medical Centre and Dandenong Hospital, Southern Health, Victoria.

She has extensive experience in diabetes, general endocrinology and vascular medicine. She also contributes to a number of diabetes education programmes in the acute and primary care sectors. Sophia’s clinical focus is on aggressive cardiovascular risk factor management through ambulatory care services. Her major research interests are studying the impact of glycaemic control on clinical outcomes as well as the effect of type 2 diabetes on the vasculature.

Dr Zoungas recently moved to Sydney to pursue a senior research/academic role within the Cardiovascular and Renal Divisions of The George Institute for International Health. She also works as a visiting medical officer in the Diabetes Clinic at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and provides a consulting service here at The George Clinic one day a week.
